SHETTLER UPDATE:

Dear Shettler Families,

It has been an amazing few weeks both here at Shettler and at the Venema home.  My wife and I welcomed our twins on February 5, 2013. Jonah and Amelia are both doing well and we cannot wait to introduce them to the students and staff of Shettler. It is with great appreciation that I recognize Jonny Morehouse who filled in during my absence.  He did an amazing job working through a wide array of issues that came up and I want to
publically say thank you for all his efforts.

We are also excited to embrace the March is Reading Month theme at Shettler.  Our students will be
asked to read for 31 straight days (The Streak) at home as part of our reading month challenge.
  We have partnerships
with the Muskegon Lumberjacks, West Michigan Whitecaps, Fruitport Lions Club and Pizza Hut as part of this month’s activities.
We will be celebrating reading all month long.  Shettler will be challenging Beach
and Edgewood to read the most books this month as part of the Lion’s Club reading challenge.

We will be having a March is Reading Month Title One Night at Shettler on March 10, 2014.  Our hope
is this can be a fun-filled evening of reading together and a chance to learn more about strategies we use every day with students to help them learn the
love of reading.

I have been working with a team of teachers this year to
look at ways to improve communication with our families.
We have many field trips and activities in the coming months and we want to assure you that we will do our very best to communicate when and where these activities are taking place in advance.  We have reviewed our procedures and apologize for the lack of communication in the past with notifying and communicating with
our families when students may be traveling for in-district concert rehearsals or not giving the advance notice you desire.
We will continue to work to improve communication with our families and appreciate the feedback we have received as we find new ways to keep our
families informed.

Additionally, we will be sending more emails to our families
to assist in this communication.
We are aware that sometimes notes are lost, misplaced, or swallowed by the “backpack monster.”  We hope that this will help
you receive the information in a timely fashion.

Thank you for being our partners in education and we look
forward to a fantastic conferences on
March 19, 20 and 21.  This information is going home later this week with students due to its individualized nature.

Sincerely,

Mr. Venema

Principal
