Accounting

Prerequisite: N/A
Accounting - If you plan on going into or studying business in the future, this class is a must. Accounting deals with the planning, keeping, analyzing and interpreting of financial records. Both large and small profit-making organizations use accounting information to make decisions. Accounting prepares students not only to keep records, but analyze and interpret them so that they can make wise decisions in business situations. Students use hands-on assignments and practice sets to help learn concepts. Automated accounting will also be introduced.

Accounting II
Prerequisite: Accounting I, with a “C-” average or better.
Accounting II is a continuation of first year Accounting. Integration of accounting practices and related computer skills prepare advanced students for future employment. Students may be eligible for articulation credit at local colleges upon completion of the course.

Business Systems & Technology 1 & 2 (B.S.T. Lab)

Prerequisite: Must receive C- or higher in BST to advance to BST 2 or instructor permission.
BST I provides basic computer training for all students- those that will be going to college or entering the business workforce. Students will use a variety of software in Windows, including Office 2003, which features Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheet), Access (database), PowerPoint (presentation slides), Publisher (desktop publishing) and Photoshop. Units include Internet activities; keyboarding skill development, document formatting, and basic business presentation skills. The curriculum used follows criteria in Microsoft Office user specialist exams. Students will also use digital cameras and scanners.

Business Systems & Technology 3 & 4 (B.S.T. Lab)

Prerequisite: Must receive C- or higher in BST 2 or instructor permission.
Students will build on software skills acquired in BST I. Additional skills include software integration, Internet Projects, Web Integration Features, business simulations, Pagemaker (desktop publishing) and the use of equipment such as digital cameras and scanners. Students may enroll for up to two hours per day. Students may be eligible for articulation credit at local colleges upon completion of the course. Students gain knowledge to prepare them for Microsoft user certification.

Business Systems & Technology 5 & 6
Prerequisite: Must receive C- or higher in BST 4 or instructor permission.
B.S.T. 301 & 302 provides advanced computer training for students that will be going to college or entering the workforce. Students will be learning the advanced software skills in the Office 2003 suite. Advanced training in the use of digital cameras, scanners, and other multi-media features will be provided. Students may be eligible for articulation credit at local colleges upon completion of the course. Successful completion will prepare them for advanced levels of Microsoft Office certification.

Web Page Design
Prerequisite: One Term of B.S.T. I with a C- or better.
Web Page Design covers the basics of web site planning, design, building, and management. It is designed for students that have limited or no experience in creating web pages, but anyone can take the class. Students will learn the basic elements of web page design, HTML, and working with graphics. Software used will primarily be Macromedia. Projects include personal and information web pages, as well as working on pages for the FHS Web site.

Web Page Design II
Prerequisite: One term of Web Page Design and instructor approval.
Web Page Design II continues the student’s training in web page design. Students will focus on building their skills in the elements of Web Page Design, HTML, multimedia, and working with graphics. Software used will be the Macromedia suite.

Marketing I
Marketing I is a course that encourages students to think critically and is designed for students interested in pursuing marketing and business either as a career or in college. This course enables students to understand and use technology to perform marketing activities. Marketing students will study economics, sales, promotion, management, business operations, job development skills, and product management. Students will have the opportunity to become members of our DECA chapter, a vocational student organization designed to develop a students leadership skills, business knowledge, and community involvement. Students are required to work in the school store, The Fruitport Marketplace that is used as a laboratory for students to learn marketing skills. Students may be eligible for articulation credit at local colleges upon completion of this course.

Advanced Marketing
Prerequisite: Marketing I with a C- or better or approval of Instructor.
Marketing II is a continuation of the Marketing curriculum. The focus of the course is on problem solving, critical thinking skills, and decision making vital to the success in marketing management positions. Students will be responsible for managing “The Market Place School Store” and make decisions about store hours, promotions, and product purchase. Students may be eligible for articulation credit at local colleges upon completion of this course. Becoming a DECA member and participation in DECA is highly recommended in this class.

Marketing III
Prerequisite: Marketing II with a C- or better or approval of instructor
Marketing III is a full year course that puts what you have learned in the past years from other marketing courses into action. In this class, students are responsible for ordering merchandise, selecting products to sell, and managing The Marketplace. Accounting for the school store is also done in class by students. Becoming a DECA member and participating in DECA is highly recommended in this class.

Cooperative Education (Capstone)

Prerequisite: Application process/Instructor approval and must maintain “C” average.
Co-Op – In this program, students must have an Approved job and enroll in a class related to that job. The students report to Work Experience once a week for instruction related to their job and are released from school the other four days to go to work. Co-Op enables students to gain practical on-the-job training and develop their professional skills while exploring the work world. Besides enhancing a student’s marketability graduation, internships also help students see that there’s a match up between their academic studies and what they are ultimately going to do in the workplace. “Employers are all looking for related job experience, and students who have Co-Op tend to have more companies wanting to hire them.” Must have 10 hours minimum work time.

Internship Program

Prerequisite: Application/interview process and has evidence in their portfolios of an interest in a career pathway into which the internship may fall. Must have two different placements and one or two terms allowed.
An Internship is a program designed to help prepare a student for a career by giving the student on-the-job experience. The student works closely with skilled workers to learn specific skills of their chosen career.
Internships have a school-based emphasis. The student’s placement must match their career pathway choice. Students will be released 5 hours per week to work at the internship location. Upon successful completion of the internship, 1/2 credit would be earned toward graduation and the grade will be averaged into the student’s G.P.A. The intern site supervisor, business education teacher, and the Career Prep Specialist will supervise interns. All internships will emphasize experiences with Michigan Employability Skills.
